Welcome to the Portsmouth Service League and thank you for visiting our site. The Portsmouth Service League is a volunteer organization made up of young women who are involved in the betterment of our community. The goal of the League is to train members to be responsible civic leaders by educating and involving our members in a variety of local opportunities. The group consists of women with many different backgrounds and career paths. Many members have lived in Portsmouth all of their lives and many are newer to the area. Every member seeks to improve our community.
The Portsmouth Service League was founded in 1955 and has been a key player in the foundation of the Children’s Museum of Virginia, the Girls Club of Portsmouth (now Girls, Inc.), the Naval Shipyard Museum, and most recently the complete renovation of the Woman’s Club of Portsmouth.
Although the League has evolved over the past 60 years, the spirit and purpose has not changed. Members are active leaders and participants in the community who devote their time, talents, and treasure to fundraising and service efforts to meet the needs of local citizens and improving our Hampton Roads communities one project at a time. Many members have used their skills honed in the League to lead other organizations in successful endeavors of service and fundraising.
Since its inception, the League has raised and invested over $1,000,000 and participated countless volunteer hours around Hampton Roads. Some of our fundraising efforts include our annual “Bag the Winter Blues” Designer Bag Bingo, to be held this year on Saturday, February 3, 2018. This has become a favorite “ladies night out”. We will conclude our year by hosting the First Citizen of Portsmouth banquet and presentation in April of 2018. We will also participate in Give Local 757 on May 8th. Please click on the events page for details on each event.
The League’s biggest endeavor over the last few years has been the acquisition, renovation, and re-opening of the Woman’s Club of Portsmouth. Please check out our Woman’s Club page to learn more about this building, the project itself, and the opportunities it offers to the public and to non-profit organizations.
I am thrilled to be a part of this organization and as president, to lead an exceptional group of women who seek to help the community they live in. As a member of this organization for the past nine years, the time and efforts put in have been returned many times over in the form of skills gained and wonderful connections made within the community and friends in the League. I am excited to begin the journey this year and to watch the League continue to grow and evolve.
Welcome to our website and thank you for your interest and support of the Portsmouth Service League.
